The National Cherry Blossom Festival is amazing.
We try to take a day trip every year, during peak season, to see all of the trees around the Tidal Basin in bloom.
A couple years ago I picked up Cherry Blossoms: The Official Book of the National Cherry Blossom Festival by Ann McClellan while we were visiting the National Mall with my mom. It is a coffee table-sized, hardback book published by National Geographic, so you know it is top notch! It has soooo many details- I re-read it every year before we head down. It shares historical information on the trees and the United States' relationship with Japan along with some additional details about the trees as gifts. It then proceeds to delve into all the varietals present in our nation's capital, along with a stunning array of photography that will make even the most seasoned photographer jealous!
The festival itself spans approximately a month and a half during the warming spring months, with peak bloom occurring around the beginning to mid-April.
If you are planning a visit to the festival, send us an email at sarah@bellavitaphotopa.com and let us know when you are in town! We'd love to meet up and experience the blossoms and you can even toss in a gorgeous session!
Here are a few images from our visit to the festival!
Enjoy.
